HEALTH IMPACT BOND – FROM VISION TO REALITY

How do we create innovative solutions to promote large scale prevention? Both in Sweden and globally, the healthcare sector is facing numerous challenges with aging populations, strong increases in lifestyle diseases and chronic illnesses, rising medical costs and a need to find new ways to structure healthcare. The majority of healthcare costs goes to providing care to those who are already ill, while only a small share is allocated to preventive measures aimed at reducing the inflow of new patients.

This seminar highlights the joint work on a type 2 diabetes prevention project by a region (Region Stockholm), a pension and life insurance company (Skandia) and a bank (SEB) to improve public health through a new type of bond with a unique financing model, where the return is linked to how successful the project is.
